TRIVENT three-way valves work safely and reliably as mixing valves and dividing valves in heat transfer technology and processes with sometimes enormous loads. For example, in cooling and heating circuits in almost all industrial applications, such as marine diesel, heat exchangers and calender presses. Due to their extremely short switching times, our three-way valves are also used for cooling water control on wire rod mills. The TRIVENT valve is designed to be used as a dividing valve or mixing valve, depending on the application. In the case of the separating function, the incoming medium is distributed into two individual streams. This distribution can take place in a ratio of 1:1 or in any different ratio. In the case of the mixing valve, on the other hand, two media to be mixed are brought together in the valve body and leave the three-way valve in the desired new state. The robust construction in modular ARCA design is precisely tailored to your medium and your process due to the choice of material, the connection to the piping system or the versatile trims. Our complete range of actuators and controllers is available for control.

This is what distinguishes TRIVENT control valves:

  • Flexibility thanks to ARCA modular system.
  • Powerful valve actuator.
  • Multifunctional positioners.
  • Various combination options for temperature, pressure and flow.
  • Robust precision trims

Frequently Asked Questions – TRIVENT three-way valve
What is the TRIVENT three-way control valve, and what does it do?

The TRIVENT three-way control valve is a control valve with three ports that, depending on configuration, can perform two functions. In mixing mode it combines two inlet streams inside the valve body, which then leave the valve as one single mixed outlet stream. In diverting mode it splits one inlet stream into two separate outlet branches – at a 1:1 ratio or any other defined ratio. Thanks to its modular design, the valve can be tailored precisely to the application.

Which series, valve sizes and pressure ratings does TRIVENT cover?

    TRIVENT is available in three series: Series 200 (DN 25–600 / 1“ – 24“, PN 10–40 / Class 150–300), Series 220 (DN 25–300 / 1“ – 12“, PN 63–160 / Class 600–900) and Series 230 (DN 25–200 / 1“ – 8“, PN 250 / Class 1500). This covers the full spectrum from low-pressure heating circuits to high-pressure applications. The temperature range extends from –196 °C to +530 °C.

When should a three-way valve be used instead of two individual valves?

A three-way valve offers two key advantages over two separate valves: first, only one actuator and one positioner are needed – saving installation space, energy and capital cost. Second, the control characteristics of both ports are mechanically coupled in an inverse relationship, ensuring repeatable and accurate splitting or mixing behaviour with simplified operation and increased process safety. Where the two lines have very different requirements, two individual valves could still be the better choice.

Which applications does TRIVENT typically serve?

Main applications are heating and cooling circuits across almost all industries: cooling-water or heat transfer oil control on heat exchangers, marine engine HT-cooling circuits, calender presses in the paper industry, cooling-water control on wire mills in the steel industry, bypass functions on heat exchangers, mixing duties in HVAC, and temperature-dependent flow control in chemical plants.

Why is TRIVENT particularly suited to wire mills?

Wire mills require extremely short stroking times because cooling-water flow must respond within seconds to changes in rolling speed or to product changeovers. The TRIVENT three-way valve is engineered exactly for this: fast stroking, robust trim and the option to divert cooling water without risk of water hammer (instead of throttling it) provide extremely responsive, process-stable control.

How does the mixing function work technically?

In mixing mode, two inlet streams act on two central plug-seat pairs from different sides (bottom and side entry). The common stem moves both plugs synchronously, so that opening one seat closes the other proportionally. Both streams meet in the mixing chamber and leave the valve as a single mixed outlet stream (side outlet) with a defined mixing ratio and (if applicable) resulting temperature.

How does diverting mode differ from mixing mode?

In diverting mode the valve is operated in the reverse flow direction: the inlet stream enters centrally (side entry) and is split into two outlet branches (opposite side and bottom outlet). Here too the common stem stroke produces an inverse split. The geometry of the two plugs determines the split ratio. The same valve can be supplied either as a mixer or a diverter, depending on the order specification.

Which materials can be selected for body and trim?

    Bodies are supplied – depending on the duty – in cast steel (1.0619 / A216 WCB), stainless steel (1.4408 / A351 CF8M), low-temperature cast steel (1.6220 / A352 LCC) or creep-resistant steel (1.7357 / A217 WC6, 1.7379 / A217 WC9). Trim materials and geometries are tailored to the relevant flow and wear conditions.

    Which actuators are used?

Because the two plug-seat pairs are mechanically coupled, the same ARCA actuators as for inline globe valves can be used: pneumatic multi-spring actuators (Series 812), single-spring actuators (811), piston actuators (812 DWK, 814) as well as electric and electro-hydraulic actuators. For extremely fast stroking (e.g. wire mills), high-speed pneumatic actuators with boosters and fast positioners – or, for change-over duties, with high-capacity, direct-acting solenoid valves – are recommended.

    Which end connections are available?

TRIVENT is supplied as standard with flanged connections to DIN EN 1092-1 or ASME B16.5 (RF and RTJ). Project-specific special connections are available as options. The valve therefore installs into the relevant piping environment without adaptation.

Which marine applications does TRIVENT serve?

TRIVENT holds a DNV Marine Type Approval (certificate TAP00002TU) and is mainly used in marine engine HT-cooling circuits, fuel-mixing systems for different fuels (HFO/MGO change-over) and engine-room auxiliaries. The robust design reliably copes with the mechanical loads and vibration of shipboard operation.

Which positioners and diagnostics are recommended?

For demanding mixing/diverting duty, the digital ARCAPRO® positioner is recommended; it provides diagnostic data via HART, PROFIBUS PA or FOUNDATION Fieldbus. Stroke, thrust and valve signature can be continuously monitored. For high-speed applications, booster configurations are available.

Which standards, certifications and service offerings are available?

TRIVENT is designed in accordance with the Pressure Equipment Directive 2014/68/EU; the body is engineered to EN 12516-2 / ASME B16.34. Optional designs to AD 2000 and NACE MR0175 as well as a DNV Marine Type Approval (TAP00002TU) are available. ATEX compliance is covered by a manufacturer’s declaration to DIN EN ISO 80079-36. The full ARCA service portfolio (ARCAlaunch, ARCAcare, ARCAsafe, ARCA24/7) is in place; sizing is performed with ARCA-VENA, all documents are available via QR code through ARCAonsite.
